[Cataclysm] Shaman, Warlock, Priest Previews Posted! April 8, 2010

Though I do not play any of the three classes whose previews were released yesterday, I saw something in all of them that hinted at possible upcoming changes in the Druid Preview to be released on Friday.

The Shaman’s Healing Wave and the Priest’s Heal

Both Shamans and Priests are getting a more standard set of healing spells. A “fast, but inefficient heal,” a “go-to average heal,” and a “big, but slow heal.”  Will this lead to a reworking of Nourish, Healing Touch, and Regrowth for the Druid?

The Shaman’s Spirit Link and the Priest’s Leap of Faith

Both of these abilities appear as though they will force effects onto other players. It seems as though Spirit Link will share the damage taken between two targets of the Shaman’s choice (and not the Shaman unless she chooses herself as a target).  Though Leap of Faith will pull another player to the Priest, it certainly affects the target of the spell and not the Priest himself.  Will Druid’s also be given a spell that affects other player’s actions in such a drastic fashion?

The Warlock’s DoTs and the Priest’s DoTs & HoTs

The few sentences regarding DoTs on the Warlock Preview was a tantalizing taste of what might be in store for HoTs, and the Priest preview likewise gave us some more insight.  But questions still remain.  Will all HoTs benefit from haste and crit as described in the Priest Preview, or just Priest HoTs?  I would venture a guess and say yes, but until specifically mentioned in the Druid Preview we can’t be sure that this isn’t for Priests only.

An even bigger question regarding HoTs is yet to be answered:  Will HoTs in Cataclysm clip?  The Warlock Preview mentioned that DoTs will no longer clip when refreshed, but will instead extend the duration of the spell on the target.  While this wasn’t repeated specifically in the Priest Preview, Ghostcrawler gives us clarification that Shadow Priest DoTs will also no longer clip.  In fact, he goes as far as to say that “preventing dot clipping is something we want to do in general,” so we can safely assume Moonkin will benefit from this as well.

However, no one at Blizzard has said anything about trying to prevent HoTs from clipping.  I can see how letting HoTs extend the duration (as opposed to refreshing the duration) might be a bit overpowered, especially when you take into consideration how they want Healers to “worry” about mana.  If you can just cast a Rejuvenation halfway through the duration of  a previous Rejuvenation and end up with a 22 second (15+7, go math!) Rejuvenation on your target, you really don’t have to think about mana efficiency when renewing your HoTs.  So, I am not holding my breath on this one.

At this point, the only thing I can be certain of until Friday is that I cannot wait for the Druid Preview. =)
